Here are some things I think needs to be said regarding fear of the things of this world, eg. war, pestilence, crime etc.
There is a difference between worry and willful ignorance. Our days are numbered, Job 14:5 so when it's your time to go, there isn't anything you can do. Some take this to mean - do nothing.
Why have a firearm for self defense, don't you trust the Lord?
Why have more than 3 days worth of groceries in the pantry, don't you trust the Lord?
Why wash your hands, don't you trust the Lord?
Why have a tornado shelter, don't you trust the Lord?
I have heard many professing Christians refer to Matthew 6 and the lilies of the field, saying they are not going to do anything more than they do in their everyday life to be able to handle "extraordinary situations". They seem not to recall all the other places in the Bible where we are given example after example of what the military refers to as "contingency plans".
A few examples to consider
- God told Noah to bring food into the ark. Genesis 6
- The Lord told Joseph to put aside food in the 7 years of plenty to make ready for the 7 years of famine to follow. Genesis 41
- The Lord gave Solomon the proverb of the Ant, who little by little filled their food pantry instead of living hand-in-mouth for today. Proverbs 6
- Jesus told his disciples to go and buy swords, not stick their nose in the air on the way to Starbucks. Luke 22
- David told the people of Judah to teach their children the use of the bow. II Samuel 1
- Proverbs 21:31 tells us though we prepare for war, safety is of the Lord
Note: the bow in those days, along with the sword, spear and sling were the military weapons of the day. The bow especially however was a high-capacity, rapid fire weapon of war. Today, David would be telling the people of Judah to teach their children the use of the AR-15 and basic marksmanship - windage and elevation, sight-alignment and trigger squeeze.
It is the Lord and the Lord alone who we should fear. However, that doesn't mean to be oblivious to the obvious dangers in this world. The devil tempted Jesus in Matthew 4, saying if He was the Son of God then just jump off a cliff and God would send His angels to bear him up (paraphrasing). Jesus rebuked the devil, saying Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
